Structure generally means the relationship, law or patterns among the connected parts. Structure itself can refer to a kind of material existence, such as architectural construction. It can also refer to a kind of attribute relationship, such as social structure. The course focuses on both sides, the attribute relationship and its architectural construction. It aims to study the internal structure and the architectural feature, to re understand the performance of division or unification between the structure and space and to explore new ways of functional using.
Course begins with selecting one type of structure for each student. On the basis of the theory and case analysis, they define the internal structure elements and the relationship among them. For example, folded plate structure system consists of fulcrum, polygonal elements, junction edges, space angle and so on. Through changing the structure elements, students can text the related structure variation, then explain the spatial
effect and spaces possibility. For instance, changing the size of elements or the junction edges relationship make a difference in the scale and performance of space. Based on the text, we can establish a conversion rule between the structure elements and space performance (especially pay more attention to the critical state from quantitative change to qualitative change ).
Therefore we can evaluate the change of space scale, space partition methods, light condition and so on. Through these study, students can start the design of new function in the fields they choose: they can recombine the function which seems not associative, meet the function by dealing with the different requirements of space scale, usage mode and streamline and proposed policy to answer the design by using the structure and conversion rule.
